SOS-TORTURE BURUNDI REPORT NO. 428 PUBLISHED ON 25 FEBRUARY 2024
This report by SOS-Torture Burundi covers the period from 17 to 24 February 2024 concerning cases of human rights violations in Burundi.
During this period, at least one (1) person was murdered in Muramvya province.
The report also deplores the case of one (1) shopkeeper who was arbitrarily arrested by the police and unjustly sentenced by the Gitega district court, and that of one (1) CNL (National Congress for Freedom) party activist who was abducted in Bubanza province.

This report by SOS-Torture Burundi covers the period from 10 to 17 February 2024 concerning cases of human rights violations in Burundi.
During this period, at least seven (7) people were murdered in various parts of the country.
The report also deplores the case of a CNL (National Congress for Freedom) party activist who was arbitrarily arrested by SNR (National Intelligence Service) agents in Bubanza province.

SOCIO-POLITICAL, ECONOMIC AND REGIONAL CONTEXT
In December 2023, the President of the Republic, Evariste Ndayishimiye, reaffirmed his government’s commitment that “the protection of human rights remains Burundi’s battle horse”, while reassuring that the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 10 December 2023 came “at a time when Burundi is striving for the well-being of all, without discrimination of any kind”.
But the reality is that, on the one hand, previous human rights violations persisted during 2023 and, on the other, new internal and regional political developments took place with a negative impact on fundamental rights and freedoms.
Highlights of 2023 include continuing violations of political freedoms, an economy marked by growing shortages to the detriment of consumers, and an ambiguous attitude on the part of the Burundian authorities towards the DRC conflict and the Burundian rebel movement Red-Tabara.

During this period, at least two (2) people were seriously injured in the province of Gitega.
SOS-TORTURE BURUNDI REPORT NO. 425 PUBLISHED ON 4 FEBRUARY 2024
This report by SOS-Torture Burundi covers the period from 27 January to 3 February 2024 concerning cases of human rights violations in Burundi.
During this period, at least two (2) people were seriously injured in the province of Mwaro.
The report also deplores the case of one (1) employee of the” Mutuelle de la Fonction Publique”[1] (MFP) who was arbitrarily arrested and detained in the Military Police lock-up in Bujumbura city by Lieutenant-Colonel Melchiade Ntirampeba and that of one (1) CNL (National Congress for Freedom) party activist who was kidnapped in Bubanza province.
